Vertical Suspension with Ropes – Circular De-icing Pattern

All Kasco de-icers come with two 20-foot suspension ropes for easy vertical installation. Simply hang the unit below a dock, boat, or other structure at a depth of 4–5 feet from the water’s surface. This vertical setup creates a circular de-iced area around the unit. You can also attach the ropes directly to either side of a boat, allowing the de-icer to rise and fall with the tide or changing water levels.

Horizontal Float Mount – Elongated Ice-Free Area

For locations without docks or fixed structures, use the optional horizontal float mount. This configuration holds the de-icer in a horizontal position just below the surface, creating an extended ice-free path. The unit can be angled for greater directional control.

Best for:

  • Shallow water areas

  • Sites with fluctuating water levels (e.g., tidal zones, large lakes)

  • Open water locations without docks or mounting points

Universal Dock Mount – Angled Installation for Targeted De-icing

The Universal Dock Mount allows you to position the de-icer at an angle, directing water flow with precision. It’s constructed from corrosion-resistant components including thermoplastic, coated steel, and stainless steel. A 10-foot, 1” stainless steel rod (not included) is required for installation.

The new Easy Lock handle makes in-water adjustments simple. Angled positioning is ideal for de-icing specific surfaces — for example, placing the unit at a boat’s bow and aiming it toward the stern, or directing flow toward a shoreline to create a “T” shaped de-iced zone.

Industrial Dock Mount – Heavy-Duty, Fully Adjustable

Built to handle tough environments, the industrial dock mount is made from corrosion-resistant metal and is compatible with a 1.5” I.D. threaded stainless steel pipe (max 10 ft, not included). Its robust design allows easy adjustment of angle, depth, and orientation for maximum performance in demanding applications.

Underwater Stand – Discreet and Adjustable (coming soon!)

The underwater stand offers flexible, low-visibility placement — perfect for ponds or lakefronts at depths of 4 to 5 feet. Made of rust-proof aluminum, it is heavy enough to stay submerged and includes an adjustable mounting bracket to direct water flow where needed.

How to Size Your De‑icer

Buying a de‑icer can feel tricky. What size do you need? Will one unit cover everything? Below are the key factors to help you choose the right system.

What information should you gather first?

Before selecting a de‑icer, know the following: your location (climate), the structure you’re protecting (dock, boathouse, float), the water depth and dimensions around the area, and your available power source. A photo of your setup is very helpful, since boat lifts, ski platforms or other attachments can reduce the open‑water area you need.

Can a single de‑icer cover the full area?

It depends on the shape and size of the structure. A straight dock of 40–50 ft may be covered with one unit positioned at the end and aimed toward shore. For L‑shaped or T‑shaped docks, very long docks (60 ft+), floating docks or shallow water zones, more than one unit or strategic placement may be required.

How does water depth affect performance?

Depth matters. For best results aim for 4–6 feet of water depth. A minimum of 2.5–3 feet may work but may limit performance. Also ensure there is 6–12 inches of clearance beneath the unit so it won’t draw debris.

What horsepower is ideal?

  • In mild winter regions: ½ HP might suffice

  • In colder zones or for larger structures: ¾ HP or 1 HP are typical

If you’re unsure, sizing up gives extra coverage and peace of mind — you can always run the unit less often.

Can a de‑icer be too large?

Yes — an oversized unit may create far more open water than necessary. It’s manageable (you can reduce run time or adjust angle) but worth being aware of.

How much open water will one unit generate?

Results vary depending on depth, orientation and climate. As a guideline:

  • ½ HP = ~30 ft diameter open area

  • ¾ HP = ~40 ft

  • 1 HP = ~50 ft

Best performance is in deeper water and earlier in the season; colder later‑winter conditions may reduce the open area.

Installation methods

  • Rope suspension — tie the unit to a dock cleat and lower into water; quick and simple.

  • Dock mount — a more permanent installation with tools and hardware; still often under an hour to install.

When should you install?

Install before ice forms — early fall is ideal if you won’t be back on site. Installation on already‑frozen water is possible (via auger or saw) but can be more difficult and risky.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mounting the unit too close to the surface — causes splashing and reduces effective area.

  • Using long extension cords — risk of power drop / safety hazard.

  • Pointing the unit away from shore — may leave unsafe ice gaps around structure.

Operating cost estimate

Typical winter run‑costs: $40–$50/month (depending on region & usage). Many deem that modest cost worth avoiding expensive ice damage.

Still unsure?

Sizing depends on your climate, water depth, dock layout and power supply. If you’re not confident, send us photos and dimensions of your setup and we’ll help you select the right model and placement. Protecting your dock now will save you costly repairs later.

Proper Storage Techniques:

You should actually store your de-icing unit with the head “down” and the bottom facing up.
